I Gave You Light

a faith record about a one-sided friendship

Regina Monae in the studio

For years I gave this friend everything — cleaned up her credit, did her taxes, did her hair, all of it free. I never counted it and never asked for it back, because that's not how real love moves.

Then the day came that I needed help, and it stopped being friendship — it became leverage. So I paid what she said I owed, in full, and I closed that door. "I Gave You Light" is about pouring into someone who turns on you the moment the giving runs the other way.

From the lyric sheet
I remember when you had nowhere to go Cold nights, broken spirit, moving slow I opened doors, gave you more than a hand Gave you a seat, gave you space, gave you plans Took you places, poured out love from my own Spent my last just to make you feel home Never counted, never asked for it back Real love don't move like that.
✝ Psalm 41:9-12 — "Even my close friend, someone I trusted… has turned against me. But you, Lord… because of my integrity you uphold me."
✎ A note to journal on

Who have you poured into without keeping score? What would it free up to finally close that door in peace?
